Emergency crews were called out to a crash south of Courtenay late last night.

Fire Chief Don Bardonnex says it happened in the 3500 block of the old island highway. He says crews responded at around 12:30 AM and found that a car had gone off the road and slammed into a tree.

He adds the occupant was partially out of the vehicle when crews arrived on scene and it took only minutes to get the occupant into an ambulance.

Bardonnex says the patient had serious injuries and was transported to hospital. There is no word on what caused the crash.
