An opportune time to check smoke detector batteries

Today marks the start of Daylight Saving Time.

With the clocks going forward one hour, Courtenay Fire Department chief Don Bardonnex says the time change is a good reminder to check the batteries in your smoke detectors.

Bardonnex adds that a good idea is to put a small sticky note or piece of tape on your smoke alarm with the date in which you last changed the batteries.

Don Bardonnex says it’s also a good idea to go through and declutter your house.

Bardonnex says you should also ensure that the paths to emergency exits are clear and easy to access, should you need to get out of the house quickly.
