MP calls for action on derelict vessels
MP Gord Johns (right) and Bill Veenhof, local Director of Nanaimo Regional District (left), survey derelict vessels in Deep Bay. Johns was also joined on the tour by local First Nation Chief Michael Recalma, owners of nearby shellfish hatchery and farms, and staff from Vancouver Island University.
The Member of Parliament for Courtenay-Alberni is calling on the government to take action on derelict vessels.
Gord Johns went out on the water at Deep Bay Tuesday to tour a group of derelict vessels that are in danger of sinking.
He says it’s time that governments closed the jurisdictional gaps so these boats can be dealt with.
Johns notes the issue of derelict vessels is both environmental and economic as an oil or fuel spill from a sunken vessel could shut down shellfish growers in the area.
