Concerns about planned First Nations reserve in Campbell River

More than 100 concerned residents from south of Campbell River packed into the Strathcona Regional District meeting yesterday to express concerns over plans for a new First Nations Reserve.

The Tlowitsis First Nation has purchased land from Timberwest, with plans to create a reserve on York Road. The nation was asking for a letter of support from the board.

Area Director Brenda Leigh says she’s pleased with the turnout from area D, as they still have a few questions to be answered before writing a letter of support.

Residents expressed concern that there has not been consultation on the plan up to this point.

The Tlowitsis First Nation has said the plans are in the preliminary stages and there will be consultations as part of the process to get approval for the reserve.
