Shellfish Harvesters Reminded to Check for Closures

If you’re planning to head out to gather clams or oysters, DFO is reminding you to check its website for closures.

There is currently a closure on bivalve harvesting north of Campbell River and there are some species specific closures in other areas.

Elysha Gordon with DFO says as the ocean temperatures warm up for the summer, it’s not uncommon to see red tide and blooms of organisms that can be harmful to people.

Gordon says if you are purchasing shellfish, make sure it is from a trusted retailer who can confirm they were harvested from an open area.
