Large portions of the Strait of Georgia have been closed to the harvest of bivalve mollusks, which includes clams, oysters, mussels, and scallops.
Elysha Gordon is the DFO’s Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program Coordinator.
She says bio-toxin monitoring shows unusually high levels of PSP toxins and the warning should be taken very seriously.
Cooking will not make the shellfish safe to eat and those affected should get medical attention immediately.
Gordon says anyone consuming shellfish should make sure it’s been taken from an area that was safe for harvest, or make sure to purchase it from a reputable vendor.
