Mining company facing environmental charges

A B.C. mining company on Banks Island is facing charges for allegedly violating the province’s environmental management act.

NDP North coast MLA Jennifer Rice says according to the Gitxaala First Nation, the company left behind environmental damage, which is affecting their salmon beds and seaweed harvesting.

She says the ministry of energy and mines did issue a pollution abatement order, but not much else has happened after that.

Rice says the big issue is that the ministry of energy and mines is completely under resourced.

The mining company will appear in court on September 7.
