Fire Prevention Week

Fire crews across the region are recognizing fire prevention week this week.

Courtenay Fire Department’s Deputy Chief Kurt MacDonald says the focus of this year’s week is raising awareness of expiration dates on smoke detectors.

He says many people don’t know that both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have expiration dates. He notes they’ve had a number of requests from residents to come to their homes to show them exactly how smoke detectors work.

MacDonald says crews will be taking the Fire Training House to local schools this week to teach kids how to safely exit a burning building.

Fire Prevention Week runs through October 15th.
