The importance of vaccines

It’s the time of year where the weather fluctuates and germs spread easily. It’s also the time of year when the flu rears its ugly head.

Medical Health Officer Doctor Charmaine Enns with Island Health says it’s very important to get your flu shot, to protect yourself and those around you.

Enns says there’s a differences between influenza and the common cold – which comes on a lot slower than the flu. Signs of the common cold are a thick head, and a runny or stuffy nose.

Enns says it’s also important to get your vaccinations for other illnesses like shingles.

Enns notes there is a shingles vaccine available for older people.
