Family violence victims no longer need to serve own protection orders

The Province is making changes to the process server system to help better protect those at risk of family violence.

When a court issues a protection order, the person the order is for, is often not in court to receive it.

That means the applicant had to arrange for a friend or family member to serve the order, or hire a professional process server to do it.

Now, professional process servers will be made available at no cost to applicants, in all regions of the province. Carla Sampson, with the RCMP Victim’s Services Unit says the change is very good news.

The Province says the new system will strengthen the ability of police to enforce protection orders and of Crown counsel to prosecute breach charges because process servers will ensure the order is properly executed.
