19 Wing Comox not yet tasked to support military action in Iraq
More details now on the Canadian contribution to coalition operations against ISIL, which will include air strikes aimed at degrading ISIL’s ability to carry out military operations against the Iraqi people.
The Air Task Force will not include aircraft from 19 Wing Comox, at least at this point.
Military officials in Ottawa confirm six CF-18 Hornet fighter aircraft from 4 Wing, Cold Lake, Alberta, one Polaris aerial refueller from 8 Wing, Trenton, Ontario to support air operations, and two Aurora surveillance aircraft from 14 Wing, Greenwood, Nova Scotia, providing reconnaissance capabilities. There was some speculation CFB Comox could be tasked with sending an Aurora crew to support military action against the terrorist group ISIL.
Meanwhile about 600 personnel will be tasked, including aircrew support elements, such as command and control and logistics.
