RCMP investigating weekend fire in Courtenay

The Comox Valley RCMP is now investigating a weekend apartment fire in Courtenay.

Fire Chief Don Bardonnex says the blaze happened Saturday night in the second floor of an apartment building on 1st Street.

He notes the occupant of the apartment was recovered from the scene but succumbed to his injuries.

Crews also recovered a dog from the building, but after numerous CPR attempts, the animal did not survive. Bardonnex says the fire did not spread to any other connected units.

He adds that 20 firefighters responded to the scene.
