Deadline passes for Municipal Election Nominations

With the nominations now closed for Municipal elections, Cumberland Mayor Leslie Baird has not been challenged, so she will be back in by acclamation. Meanwhile for Comox, it will be Councillor Tom Grant going up against incumbent Mayor Paul Ives, and for Courtenay, Councillor Jon Ambler has officially filed his nomination papers late this afternoon, and will battle it out with incumbent Mayor Larry Jangula in the November 15th Municipal Election. Scores of candidates have thrown their hat into the ring for various municipal councils and regional district director positions, and you can check out profiles for many of them by clicking into our 2014 Civic Elections link.

Meanwhile for the Comox Valley Regional District…

The nomination period has closed for candidates in the Comox Valley rural areas, for trustees representing the rural areas for School District 71, and for Islands Trust representatives from Denman and Hornby Islands — and there will be elections required in most cases.

In Baynes Sound-Denman/Hornby Islands (Area ‘A’) there are three candidates for one seat: Wayne Anderson, Dan Lisch, and Bruce Jolliffe. In Lazo North (Area ‘B’) there are two candidates for one seat: Jim Gillis and Rod Nichol. In Puntledge-Black Creek (Area ‘C’) there are two candidates for one seat: James Derry and Edwin Grieve.

The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) also conducts the nomination, and elections, for school trustees from Areas A, B and C for School District 71 and for Islands Trust representatives from Denman and Hornby Islands.

Regarding electoral area representatives for School District 71, there are two candidates for the one seat of office of school trustee from Area ‘A’: Chris Aikman and Sheila McDonnell. There is just one candidate for the office of school trustee from Area ‘B’: Tom Weber. And there are two candidates for the one seat of office of school trustee from Area ‘C’: Ian Hargreaves and Paula Selby.

Regarding Denman Island local trust area representative to Islands Trust, there are three candidates for the two seats: Laura Busheikin, David Critchley and Perri Gorrara. And regarding Hornby Island local trust area representative to Islands Trust, there are two candidates for the two seats: Alex Allen and Tony Law.

Next steps:
– Tuesday, October 14 at 4:00 p.m. is the deadline by which a challenge of nomination may be made, by an application to the Provincial Court in accordance with section 73.2 of the Local Government Act.
– Friday, October 17 at 4:00 p.m. is the deadline by which a candidate may withdraw from the election by submitting a written withdrawal to the chief election officer
– Monday, October 20 at 4:00 p.m. is the deadline by which the chief election officer must declare that an election by voting is to be held or that the candidates are elected by acclamation.
