Single car accident halts traffic to a crawl in Courtenay

A pick-up truck smashed into a power pole near the 17th street bridge in Courtenay this morning, closing the bridge in both directions, and halting traffic all around the city. The bridge has since re-opened, but the stretch of road between the bridge and the area near the Honda dealership is still closed.

The Courtenay Fire Department says the pole then came down across the vehicle, but both people that were inside, a male driver and a child passenger, escaped with only minor injuries.

Courtenay Fire Chief Don Bardonnex says, cleanup will take a while.

“I’d just advise residents to make other arrangements and give yourself extra time, because the traffic is backing up near the bridge sites,” says Bardonnex.
