High School Trades Apprenticeship Programs Receive Funding

Vancouver Island and surrounding area school districts are set to receive $280,000 from the Industry Training Authority (ITA) to support the Youth Work in Trades Program for the 2017-2018 school year.

The funding will go towards 11 school districts to support youth apprentices in their communities.

Youth Work in Trades is a dual credit program that provides an opportunity for BC students in grades 10, 11 and 12 to begin their apprenticeship journey.

The funds help school districts connect students with local employers to get practical work experience in their field of choice.

Students will earn a pay cheque while gaining credit toward their high school diploma and the work-based training portion of their trades apprenticeship. An apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job and classroom training and typically takes four years to complete.

The following 11 school districts are receiving funding as part of the program:

  • Alberni (SD 70)                                   $20,000
  • Comox Valley (SD 71)                        $30,000
  • Cowichan Valley (SD 79)                   $20,000
  • Greater Victoria (SD 61)                     $20,000
  • Gulf Islands (SD64)                            $20,000
  • Nanaimo (SD 68)                                $30,000
  • Powell River (SD 47)                          $20,000
  • Qualicum (SD 69)                               $40,000
  • Saanich (SD 63)                                 $30,000
