Abbeyfield House Gifted to John Howard Society of North Island

The John Howard Society of North Island is breathing new life into Courtenay’s Abbeyfield House.

The facility previously served as a 10-bedroom seniors residence.

Its Board announced in July that it would be shutting down the building as it was not compliant with the Residential Tenancy Act.

Fortunately, all tenants have since been able to find alternative housing arrangements, according to Board member Joan Carson.

Earlier this month, the Board sat down to discuss the future of the facility, with proposals coming from groups like the Glacier View Lodge Society and the Comox Valley Hospice Society.

It was decided to gift the building to the John Howard Society, who operate transitional housing for youth in Campbell River at the Barnett House.

The Society’s Wendy Richardson says Abbeyfield is a “perfect fit” for them and that there will be significant community talks before the operation opens. She says there will most likely not be any residents at the new facility before next spring.
