Series of small quakes "not uncommon", says research scientist

A cluster of earthquakes hit off the coast this weekend… none of them were felt on land but it is another reminder to get ready for the big one.

Doctor Honn Kow, a research scientist at the Geological Survey of Canada says the quakes started Saturday afternoon and they hit 200 k’s offshore from Port Hardy.

He says they were between a magnitude 4 and 5.

Kow says these earthquakes happened where two tectonic plates are very actively shifting. There are several hundred small quakes detected off the coast each year.
