Local Icon Passes Away

The Comox Valley is saying goodbye to one of its longest and proudest residents.

Ruth Masters has passed away. The iconic activist was 97 years old.

Over her historic life, Masters served in the Canadian Air Force during the second World War, before returning home to Courtenay to build her log cabin in the woods.

She worked on the Courtenay Museum Board, putting together 3 books covering the history of the Valley region.

Masters was known for her intense passion to protect natural land like Strathcona Park.

A winner of the Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year Award, Masters is remembered as a tireless advocate for causes and positive change in the Comox Valley.
