COURTENAY, B.C.- The Wachiay Friendship Centre is getting a funding boost from the province.
The Courtenay-based institution is receiving $250,000 to purchase the Wachiay building. This will allow the centre to have a stable base of operations.
The Wachiay Friendship Centre is one of sixty not-for-profits across B.C. receiving funding through the government’s Community Gaming Grants program.
“Our demographic includes children to seniors, the homeless, unemployed, and working poor families and individuals,” said Wachiay’s Executive Director Michael Colclough.
“We recorded close to 16,500 points of service last year.”
The Wachiay Friendship Centre provides more than fifty programs for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people within the Comox Valley Regional District.
“Owning this building secures our future and the delivery of social programs and services to all people living in our community,” said Colclough.
“I have personally experienced the positive impact that not-for-profit organizations have in strengthening communities, and I consider it vitally important that our government supports their work,” said Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Selina Robinson.
In the first yearly intake of the grants for capital projects, the provincial government is investing $5 million in not-for-profits that are organizing capital projects that will provide a community benefit and are accessible to the public.
