Special weather statement issued for eastern Vancouver Island

COMOX, B.C- Vancouver Island could see freezing rain and snow today.

According to a notice issued by Environment Canada, the weather is linked back to a Pacific low and front off Vancouver Island moving off Artic air from the South Coast.

“The track of the low will lead to strong north easterly flow from Howe Sound and the Fraser Valley hitting the east side of Vancouver Island,” reads the notice.

“The cool, strong northeast flow will increase precipitation rates, causing rain to turn to snow later this morning over higher terrain from Victoria all the way up to Campbell River, and over inland communities of Vancouver Island, like Port Alberni and Lake Cowichan.”

Snowfall amounts of five to ten centimetres are possible over the higher terrain of Greater Victoria, Eastern Vancouver Island, the Southern Gulf Islands, and Inland Vancouver Island, along with a risk of freezing rain in the afternoon and evening.

On the mainland, the Fraser Valley has been issued a winter storm warning, with large amounts of snow in the forecast for the mountain highways.

The following areas are covered by the statement on the Island.

  • East Vancouver Island – Courtenay to Campbell River
  • East Vancouver Island – Duncan to Nanaimo
  • East Vancouver Island – Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay
