Vanier finishes third at Towhee Tournament

COURTENAY, B.C.- The senior boys basketball team fought hard, but ultimately came up just short at the 50th annual Towhee Tournament this weekend.

7 other teams were in the Comox Valley for the competition. In Vanier’s first game, they defeated Westview (Maple Ridge) 66-59. Levi Timmermans led the charge for the Towhees with 19 points.

It was a different story in their second game of the tournament. The Towhees lost a close one to Nanaimo District Secondary. Final score was 80-71, with Timmermans dropping his tournament high 24 points.

Timmermans was later named to the 1st All-Star team at the tournament.

Although the Towhees did not make it to the finals, they dominated their third place matchup against Parkland (North Saanich). Riley Meyerhoff scored 12 en route to Vanier’s 71-47 win.

Nanaimo and Claremont (Victoria) clashed in the tournament final.

Nanaimo’s Ben Whiting scored 20 points to lead his team over Claremont in a nail-biter. Final score in the gold medal game was 60-58.

In addition to Timmermans being named to the 1st All-Stars team, Meyerhoff was named a 2nd All-Star, and Vanier’s Bentley Barth earned the Nate Dasilva Outstanding Towhee Award.

Final standings are as follows:

  • 1st place – Nanaimo District Secondary School
  • 2nd place – Claremont
  • 3rd place – GP Vanier
  • 4th place – Westview
  • 5th place – Parkland
  • 6th place – Carihi
  • 7th place – Eric Hamber
  • 8th place – Kwalikum
