Mount Washington closed due to weather conditions

UPDATE as of 10:00 a.m. on Sun. January 21st: Emcon Services and DriveBC say the road is closed in both directions from Mount Washington to Junction of Highway 19 because of winter highway maintenance work. Estimated time of completion is 5:00 p.m.

COURTENAY, B.C.- Rugged weather conditions have forced staff at Mount Washington to close the resort. The original report can be found through this link.

Saturday night, traffic was stalled going up and down the mountain due to heavy snowfall. Comox Valley RCMP informed 98.9 the Goat that trees had also fallen.

They were cleared as of approx. 11 p.m. last night.

A statement posted to Mount Washington’s Facebook page reads that, the “resort is CLOSED. Due to heavy snowfall and high avalanche danger, we will not be opening today. Please do not travel up the road.”

Strathcona Parkway has been reopened as of this morning, but is down to one lane at most parts. Vehicle traveling down are advised to drive slow, use 4-wheel drive and chains if possible.

The public is advised to not drive up the mountain as cars attempt to travel down Strathcona Parkway.
