School District 71 votes for two-week spring break

COURTENAY, B.C.- A decision has been made on the length of Spring Break by School District 71.

SD71’s Board of Education unanimously accepted the recommendation to adopt a two-week spring break model for the upcoming three consecutive school year calendars.

1,182 people voiced their input through an online survey put out by the school district. According to a release from SD71, that is the largest voter turnout for school calendar surveys to date.

Respondents included parents, staff, students, teachers and the community. 76 per cent voted in favour of the return of a two-week break.

The release states that the break will go between March 26th, 2018 and April 6th, 2018. With the two-week option selected, the elementary school day will need to be extended by two minutes in the school years starting in the fall of 2018 and 2019, and by five minutes for the 2020 calendar.

Secondary schools will not see any time adjustments.

Each year, school districts in British Columbia are required to prepare and submit calendars for the elementary and secondary school year to the Ministry of Education.

The calendar options were put together by the District Calendar Committee.
