Former Comox mayor passes away

COMOX, B.C.- A former leader in the town of Comox has passed away.

Current mayor Paul Ives announced this morning that former mayor, Dick Merrick, has died. Merrick served as mayor in the 1970s.

Ives said that he was instrumental in the completion of the Comox Marina Park, the move and construction of the state-of-the-art Comox Fire Hall and the building of D’Esterre House for seniors in Comox.

“He had a lot of early inspiration about being a member of this community through his time in the Air Force, he was a long-time pilot,” Ives said, speaking with 98.9 the Goat.

“He served as an instructor during the War (WWII), under the British Commonwealth training program, which was based out of the prairies and I guess that’s probably what brought him to Comox.”

Ives said there won’t be a service by request of the family, but the town will recognize Merrick’s passing and honour his legacy.

“Like many of our community members that have served in the Air Force, he was one that took his service to the country into his community.”

Merrick was 95 years old.
