Residents asked to “use water responsibly” during penstock shutdown

COURTENAY, B.C- Comox Valley residents should keep an eye on their water use later this month.

Annual maintenance at the BC Hydro penstock will be taking place on Mar. 18 to Mar. 23, including fish screen cleaning at the Puntledge diversion dam.

The penstock will be shut down during the maintenance, and water for the Comox Valley Water System will be pumped directly from the Puntledge River.

While BC Hydro anticipates that water levels are high enough at this time of year to avoid water restrictions, residents are being asked to use water responsibly.

“Water demand within the system is typically low enough in March that we should be able to weather this period with no water restrictions and still meet the needs of our residents,” said Mike Herschmiller, Manager of Water Services for the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) in a release.

“However, there will be less water available to us so we are asking residents to avoid activities like washing their driveways and cars during this outage.”

The district will be doing regular tests of water at the Puntledge intake and other parts of the water system to make sure quality isn’t negatively affected by the shutdown.
