Charges laid in north Courtenay shooting

COURTENAY, B.C- Police have named the suspect in a Wednesday morning shooting in the Comox Valley.

According to an RCMP news release, 27 year old Richard Daniel Vigneault of Saanich went before a justice of the peace on March 15, after being arrested without incident in a residence along Coleman Road.

Police had been searching for a man wanted after an early-morning shooting sent a 30 year old man to hospital on Wednesday. The man had confronted another man on his property in the 5700 block of the Old Island Highway north of Courtenay, and was shot after “a brief interaction”.

The search combed the woods along Coleman Road throughout Wednesday and into Thursday morning. Vigneault was arrested at 5:50 a.m in the 2200 block of the road.

Vigneault is now facing numerous charges including break and enter, possession of a loaded restricted firearm without authorization, possession of a firearm while prohibited, unauthorized possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of property obtained by crime under $5000 and breach of probation.

He’s currently in custody, and will be appearing in court on March 19 in Courtenay.
