Drivers banned for 90 days after downtown Courtenay traffic stop

COURTENAY, B.C- A pair of drivers have had their vehicles impounded after being charged with impaired operation on Saturday.

According to a news release from the Comox Valley RCMP, an officer conducted a traffic stop in the downtown area of Courtenay during the early hours of April 14, which led to the driver of the vehicle being investigated for impaired operation.

The driver was found to be intoxicated, and was given a 90 day driving prohibition, with their vehicle impounded. One hour later, another vehicle was found to be speeding and stopped by police. The driver had been a passenger in the previous vehicle and was also found to have consumed alcohol.

They were given a 90 day driving prohibition.

Police also found a vehicle doing 175 kilometres per hour in the 120 limit on Highway 19 near Union Bay on April 12. The driver had been located by an officer doing stationary enforcement, who then stopped the vehicle and issued a ticket for excessive speed. The vehicle was also impounded.

On the same day, a vehicle was stopped for speeding in Black Creek, with an investigation into impaired operation quickly starting after the stop. It was found that the driver had consumed alcohol before driving, and they were given a 90 day driving prohibition. Their vehicle was also impounded for 30 days.

On April 10, the way in which a vehicle was being operated caught the attention of an officer. After a traffic stop was conducted, it was found the driver was operating the vehicle while impaired. They received a 24 hour driving prohibition.

Beyond the driving offences, the RCMP also received several theft reports in the last few days. On April 10, a break, enter and theft from a carport on the 300 block of Urquhart Avenue in Courtenay was reported.

Two bicycles were taken, as well as two children’s bikes, being a child-size green Norco bike and an orange child-size CCM bike, along with two skateboards.

A theft of propane tanks and mischief to a trailer was reported on April 11. The trailer had been parked on the 460 block of 19 Street in Courtenay. The lock securing the tanks had been cut, with a wheel damaged.

A mischief to a vehicle was reported on April 11. The vehicle had been parked overnight in the 1500 block of Dingwall Road, and it had a tire slashed and the door scratched.
