Comox council approves marijuana sales ban
The Town of Comox has banned sales of recreational cannabis. Council passed the bylaw at Wednesday’s meeting.
The move comes as the federal government works it way towards legalizing marijuana. Comox Mayor Paul Ives says the ban is just a temporary measure:
Ives says feedback from the public will shape council’s future decisions on where marijuana stores will be allowed to operate:
Once both federal and provincial regulations for legalized pot are in place, Ives says council will be able to move forward on creating local bylaws. Ives added that council’s position on the issue so far is similar to that of other municipalities on the island, such as Tofino.
It was believed initially that recreational marijuana would be legalized by Canada Day, but now, Ives says, it’s more likely to be no sooner than the end of summer.
