Hydro speeds up Puntledge flows for the weekend

COURTENAY, B.C. – Kayakers might want to hop in the waters of the Puntledge River this weekend.

BC Hydro said due to a water level rise in the Comox Lake reservoir, crews are speeding up water flows this weekend.

Hydro’s Stephen Watson said in a release issued Thursday that the utility is aiming to keep the reservoir below 135.3 metres.

On Friday night, the water flow was increase to about 80 cubic metres per second.

Watson’s notice stated that the increase flow would benefit kayakers.

Experienced paddlers could notice a flow rate of about 11 cubic metres per second at the Browns River, and around 65 cubic metres per second at the Puntledge/Browns crossover.

Although experienced kayakers can take advantage of the increased flows, the general public is being advised to steer clear of the Puntledge River on Saturday and Sunday. Danger safety signage is in place along the river channel.
