Courtenay council approves RCMP contract, in principle

COURTENAY, B.C- The Comox Valley RCMP could be getting one more member next year.

During Monday’s meeting of city council, the contract with the Valley’s police force was up for “approval in principle”, for 2019-2020. The current agreement between Courtenay and the RCMP for policing has a twenty-year term since it’s approval in 2012, with policing provided by the RCMP until 2032.

Council is required to sign off on the contract’s expenditure cap each year, and were asked to consider a total of $6,315,290 for a complement of 31.4 members, an addition of one member, for the upcoming budget planning in 2019.

Despite the approval at Monday’s meeting, council will be able to revisit the approval in April of 2019.

Earlier in 2018, the police had asked for an increase to allow for four new members and one public servant for the next budget.

Council decided against approval of the request, which eventually led to the decision on Monday.

Mayor Larry Jangula said there would be “no major changes” right now.
