Fire crew scrambled after report of wildfire near Myra Falls Mine

STRATHCONA PARK, B.C- A wildfire has broken out near the Myra Falls Mine in Strathcona Park tonight.

According to the Coastal Fire Centre, the exact size of the fire remains unknown at this time. As of 7:30 p.m., a fire crew from Campbell River had been sent by the provincial wildfire service to evaluate the situation.

They were travelling via helicopter, and had not yet arrived in the area when the Coastal Fire Centre spoke with MyComoxValleyNow.com.

A post on social media from a man who appeared to be in the area appears to show the fire burning in the hills above the mine.

The same post indicates that the area below the hills contains the mine’s tailings pond.

As of this publication, it is unknown if mine personnel will have to leave the area. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
