Campbell River Storm name captains for next season

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – The reigning VIJHL champions have selected their captains for the upcoming hockey season.

Cole Slaney will be returning to the team and will don the ‘C’ as the club’s captain.

In 37 games last season, the 1998-born defenseman recorded 19 points, with one goal and 18 assists.

He also suited up in two games for the BCHL’s Powell River Kings.

Comox’s Reid Wheeldon will serve as an assistant captain alongside Slaney.

In 26 games with the Storm this past season, the forward scored 9 goals and dished out 14 assists.

Damon Porter, of Calgary Alberta, will also serve as an assistant captain. He’s committed to Arizona State’s hockey program for the 2019-2020, but will suit up one last time for the Campbell River-based squad.

This past year, the forward split his time with the Calgary Mustangs of the AJHL (he scored 2 goals and recorded 10 assists) and the Storm.

In nine games with Campbell River, Porter had three assists and one goal.

Courtenay-born defenseman Logan Cursley is trying his hand at Junior A hockey, but according to Storm coach Lee Stone, if Cursley returns to the VIJHL team, he will wear an ‘A’ on his jersey as an assistant captain.

Last season, Cursley played in one game with the BCHL’s Alberni Valley Bulldogs (one assist), and seven games with the Powell River Kings (two assists).

In 36 games with the Storm, he scored four goals and recorded 18 assists.

The team’s regular season starts in September.

On September 1st and 2nd, during the pre-season, the VIJHL club will host the PJHL champion Delta Ice Hawks.
