Vanier students to start school one day late

COURTENAY, B.C. – Students at G.P. Vanier Secondary in Courtenay will start the upcoming school year one day later than other schools in the Valley.

All School District 71 (SD71) schools will begin classes on Tuesday, September 4th.

Vanier’s first day of school will be Wednesday, September 5th. SD71 said the one day delay is to finalize upgrade work at the school.

On September 5th, classes will start at 9:05 a.m. The Vanier school bus will be running at its regular schedule.

The final construction phase marks the end of a $33.8 million seismic upgrade and building replacement project that began in July 2016.

“Heatherbrae Builders and district staff have been heavily involved over the summer months in a final push to ensure the school is ready for operations. We are tremendously grateful for their hard work and dedication, particularly during those weeks this summer when we experience record high temperatures in the Valley,” said SD71 Director of Operations Ian Heselgrave in a district release.

“This delay is necessary and we are steadfast in our commitment to providing education facilities that are not only equipped for delivering 21st century learning but are completely safe for students and for staff.”

More details about the upcoming school year, including transportation, can be found through School District 71’s website.
