Comox Council looking at local tax exemptions

COMOX, B.C. – Comox Town Council is considering granting permissive tax exemptions for the next three years for 21 organizations in the town.

Among them are all of the land and buildings for the Filberg Lodge & Park, Archives & Museum, Pearl Ellis Art Gallery, Comox Lions Club, and Unity Comox Valley, Tennis Clubhouse, Comox Legion, d’Esterre Seniors Centre, and Pt. Holmes Boat Launch, and all of the float building for the Marine Rescue Station.

Other exemptions include 76 percent of land for the Comox Golf Course, half of the land and building for Tigger Too Day Care, and all of the land for the United Church, Pentecostal Church, Anglican Church, Bay Community Church, Presbyterian Church, The Views at St. Joseph’s, Nature Trust of BC, and 1582 Balmoral Ave.

Comox Mayor Paul Ives explained the process: “They apply and before the end of October, we have to approve them.”

Ives added, “That’s a standard list of churches, children’s daycares, and things like the legion and then the golf course, as well.”

The exemption bylaw and copies of the applications can be viewed at Comox Town Hall, 1809 Beaufort Avenue, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.

The exemptions will take effect in 2019, ’20, and ’21.
