Rogue turkeys invade Merville backyard

MERVILLE, B.C. – Joy Bell is having turkey troubles today.

The Merville resident is dealing with a flock of turkeys in her yard, and she has no idea where the birds came from.

“All of the sudden our daughter-in-law’s dogs started having a fit on their property which is also our property,” Bell told the MyComoxNow.com newsroom.

“I looked out and there were about 20 big turkeys wandering around in her yard. They were up on her deck and doing whatever turkeys do… making a mess everywhere.”

One of the turkeys managed to make it past the mesh fence separating the property from the road and as of the mid-afternoon was pacing back and forth, trying to figure out a way to rejoin his feathered friends.

Bell said the other turkeys have since migrated to her yard, and now they are starting to make some noise.

She believes they are panicking because they can’t find a way out of the yard.

To help the birds, she opened the gates around her property at the end of Hodgins Road with the hope that they will simply leave.

Bell said the turkeys are becoming “residents of the road” and she believes they are roosting up in the trees in the neighbourhood.

“So if anybody is missing their turkeys, they will probably find them on Hodgins Road,” she said.

“It’s getting close to Christmas. Someone might like to have a turkey if they can round one up.”
