Comox Valley Sports and Aquatics Centres open during labour negotiations

COMOX VALLEY, B.C. – It’s business as usual at Comox Valley’s recreational facilities, despite a strike vote from their unionized staff.

All CVRD recreation facilities will remain open and programs will continue throughout the mediation process.

A mediator has been assigned to help reach a collective agreement between the CVRD and its recreation facilities unionized staff, represented by the United Steelworkers (USW) Union Local 1-1937.

Workers voted in favour of a strike on Nov. 4.

According to the CVRD, the USW proposal includes a 2.5 per cent per year wage increase for three years (2018, 2019, 2020).

The CVRD noted that “the USW proposal is beyond the mandate provided by the CVRD Sports Commission.”

The appointment of a mediator ensures that no strike action will occur while both parties remain at the table.

“The CVRD is committed to continue working towards a fair solution and has requested a mediator to assist in the discussions moving forward,” said Jennifer Zbinden, CVRD Senior Manager of Recreation Facilities.

USW employs 81 staff at the Comox Valley Sports and Aquatics Centres. Both facilities will remain open and programs will continue as usual throughout the mediation process.
