Baynes Sound oyster harvesting areas closed after heavy rains

BAYNES SOUND, B.C- A temporary emergency closure has been put in place across a large chunk of oyster-harvesting areas near the Comox Valley.

The closure runs from Comox Harbour’s annual closure down to Fanny Bay.  It was put in place due to rainfall in the area exceeding 35 millimetres over a 24-hour period from Argyle Road to Base Flats, while Base Flats to Ship Point, and Ship Point to north of Cook Creek were closed due to rainfall exceeding 40 millimetres.

Closures are put in place based on the biotoxin risk from harvesting shellfish.

Multiple shellfish growing operations are in the areas covered by the closure.

More information and a map showing closures can be found at the following link: http://maps.bccdc.org/shellfish/
