Tentative agreement between CVRD and United Steel Workers, says district

COURTENAY, B.C- The possibility of a strike at the Valley’s aquatics centre appears to be receding.

Earlier this fall, members of United Steel Workers Local 1-1937 voted in favour of a strike, after bargaining attempts with the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD). The union represents 81 staff at the CVRD’s recreational facilities.

The union would have had to provide notice of a strike to the district before they went ahead, and a mediator was appointed in the wake of the vote.

Both sides have now reached a tentative agreement, according to the CVRD.

“We are pleased to be able to reach a tentative agreement with United Steel Workers (USW) Local 1-1937,” read a statement from the district.

“The tentative agreement requires ratification from both USW employees and the CVRD Board before any agreement becomes official. All parties are committed to working together to ensure quality service delivery. An update on the next stage in the bargaining process will be provided as it comes available.”

According to the district, the hope is to have the agreement ratified by the end of the year.

Exact details of the tentative agreement were not available at the time of publication.
