Courtenay providing environmentally-friendly ways to dispose of Christmas trees

COURTENAY, B.C. – Wondering what to do with your Christmas tree once the holidays are over?

The City of Courtenay has your answer.

City households serviced by the Yard Waste Program, which includes single family houses and duplexes, may leave trees at the curb for pickup on the same day as regular weekly garbage/yard waste collection.

Residents are urged to cut their trees in half and remove all decorations and tinsel.

As well, the Courtenay Volunteer Fire Department is hosting its annual Christmas Tree Collection and Chipping event on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 5 and 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Drop off your tree at the following locations with a minimum $5 donation:

  • Courtenay Fire Hall, 650 Cumberland Road
  • Crown Isle Plaza, 444 Lerwick Road in front of Thrifty Foods

For a minimum $5 donation, at-home pickup is also available for all areas served by the Courtenay Fire Department, including fire protection districts.

Call the Courtenay Fire Hall in advance at 250-334- 2513 or email [email protected]

All proceeds from the Christmas Tree Chipping event will go to local charities and youth sport groups.

The City notes that proper disposal of Christmas trees will ensure they are turned into mulch or compost, that in turn will help other trees and plants.
