Brown’s Bay fish packing plant getting federal funding to improve wastewater treatment

VANCOUVER ISLAND, B.C- A fish packing plant near Campbell River is getting funding to clean their wastewater better.

Earlier this week, federal Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard Jonathan Wilkinson was in our neck of the woods to make an announcement of funding for clean technology.

Wilkinson announced $1.1 million in funding from the Fisheries and Aquaculture Clean Technology Adoption Program to support and accelerate clean economic growth.

It included $424,219 in funding to Brown’s Bay Packing Co, which will prevent bacteria and viruses from fish processing waste from entering the marine environment,

The facility will be installing new equipment to treat their wastewater, aimed at significantly reducing bacteria and suspended solids, killing viruses, and removing the “blood color” from the wastewater.

The announcement follows outcry just over a year ago, after there were images posted all over social media of a bloody discharge into the ocean from the plant, which is located near Campbell River.
