Free workshop for cancer patients coming to Comox on Jan. 22

COMOX VALLEY, B.C. – There are steps you can take to improve your life after a cancer diagnosis.

That’s according to a non-profit organization based out of Victoria which is coming to the Comox Valley for a one-day workshop later this month.

A free one-day workshop is scheduled for Jan. 22 in Comox.

Running from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Berwick Retirement Community complex at 1700 Comox Ave., the workshop will lay out a blueprint for better health for people living with cancer.

The workshop is being presented by InspireHealth, a non-profit organization that offers support to people who have a diagnosis of cancer.

During the workshop, Dr. Lori McFarlane and dietitian Erin Roman will talk about self care, nutrition, the foundations of health and healing, and stress management.

Participants can register by phone at 1-250-595-7125, and the registration deadline is Jan. 17.

Eva Yan, a dietitian who is part of the InspireHealth Supportive Cancer Outreach Team, said the knowledge passed on from the workshop is invaluable.

“I think it’s changed people’s lives, by empowering them to take care of themselves, and just realizing there are some things they can’t control, but yet they can control their quality of life by learning these tools,” Yan said, “to keep their nutrition up, to exercise (and) manage their stress.”

About InspireHealth

The organization is made up of a doctor, dietitians, exercise therapists and a clinical councillor who can provide free, one-on-one virtual interviews with people diagnosed with cancer.

“Our consults are so long,” Yan said. “They are 75 minutes for the initial (consultation) and then follow-ups are about half an hour, 45 minutes. That’s really beneficial for people who live far away from Victoria because they can still talk to health professionals. Even if they can’t make it to the workshop, they can give us a call anyway.”

All of its services including free yoga, cooking, exercise, and meditation classes are free because the InspireHealth is partially funded by the B.C. Ministry of Health.
