Courtenay Fire holds annual tree chipping

COURTENAY, B.C. – The Courtenay Fire Department is offering a responsible and eco-friendly way for residents to recycle their Christmas trees this weekend.

The department is hosting its annual tree chipping, both today and tomorrow.

The collection event takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both days.

Firefighter Chris Murdock said it’s been a success so far, with one truckload collected at the Courtenay Fire Hall on Cumberland Road, as of 1:30 p.m.

Murdock and fellow firefighters were joined by Comox Valley Minor Hockey Association pee-wee team The Quicksilvers at the local fire hall.

Murdock is the team’s head coach. His assistant coach is Andrew Vandendriessche, who was also present for the tree chipping.

Murdock said that on Sunday, Anthony Gray and the pee-wee Royals will be at the Cumberland Road hall. Today, they’re set up at the Crown Isle Thrifty Foods, the secondary venue for the annual event.

Comox Fire Rescue is also holding its tree chipping event for residents in Comox. That’s happening from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. today and tomorrow at the Noel Avenue hall.

Funds collected from the Comox tree chipping will go towards local charitable organization You Are Not Alone (YANA) Comox Valley. YANA helps families with medical travel costs for their children in need.
