Anti-pipeline rally to be held in Courtenay tomorrow

COURTENAY, B.C. – Residents are invited to a “peaceful gathering” in downtown Courtenay tomorrow.

The Day of Action for Unist’ot’en and Gidimt’en will take place outside of Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns and Courtenay-Comox MLA Ronna-Rae Leonard’s office from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

“This is a local response by those of us lucky enough to live on K’omoks First Nations territory, in the Comox Valley, to a call-out for an international day of action from the Wet’suwet’en Access Point on Gidimt’en Territory. They, along with the Uni’stot’en camp, are facing an imminent raid by RCMP tactical units because they are asserting their inalienable land rights against Coastal Gaslinks fracked gas pipeline on their unceded territories,” read the event’s description on Facebook.

Organizers said they will gather in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en to spread their message.

“Indigenous law is the law of the land on unceded territories, and traditional title-holders have the right to refuse access to their lands. Disregarding this ancient law in order to further expand fossil fuel production during a time of extreme climate crisis is totally unacceptable. Agents of the corporate state will face resistance if they continue to pursue resource colonialism during this climate emergency. No RCMP siege for fracked gas pipelines on stolen native land,” read the notice.
