Snowfall warning prompted by icy air from the Interior

VANCOUVER ISLAND, B.C- Today’s snowfall warning came quicker than expected for Vancouver Island.

According to Environment Canada meteorologist Carmen Hartt, cool air moved faster than the agency anticipated.

“We got some more cold air that’s actually being funneled out of the interior of B.C. across the Strait of Georgia and onto the eastern coast of Vancouver Island,” said Hartt.

“So, with that cold air we are seeing wet heavy snow falling and over higher elevations on Vancouver Island and a lot of the highways, we are seeing snow accumulating a bit faster.”

Snow is expected to continue through the day and then gradual warming will turn the snow to rain by tomorrow morning.

The heaviest snow is expected over higher terrain and locations away from the water.

In light of the snowfall, MainRoad North Island has activated their winter operations “fact sheet” on their website, which can be found here: https://mainroad.ca/winter-operations-faq-mainroad-north-island-contracting-lp

Mainroad has said that crews will be performing snow removal on all service area highways until the event passes, and the roadways are clear and back to normal.
