Courtenay council supports new brewery

COURTENAY, B.C. – Courtenay’s city council is in favor of a new brewery.

Ace Brewing Company plans to open up shop at 150 Mansfield Drive, near the Courtenay Airpark and in the vicinity of the Whistle Stop Pub in Courtenay.

The new brewery will include a lounge area.

Courtenay mayor Bob Wells said council is aware of some concerns from the public, with the pub being so close to the Whistle Stop.

“There certainly was some concern, but I think at the end of the day, they’re going to be serving different crowds, so I think that there’s room for both of them,” he said.

After discussion, council approved the application for the new business.

Council also approved an amended motion from councillor Doug Hillian, aimed at collecting staff’s opinion about access to the main road from Mansfield, and pedestrian access across Cliffe Avenue.

There is no timeline for when work would begin on the new brewery.

Ace Brewing Company said its hours would be 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
