Update: flipped semi closes Highway 19

CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. – A semi truck flipped on its side has closed a section of Highway 19 in Campbell River.

The accident is northbound on Highway 19 between Jubilee Parkway and Willis Road.

As of 8:44 a.m. today, the section of highway was closed, and traffic was being detoured via Jubilee Parkway and Highway 19A.

Campbell River fire chief Thomas Doherty said just after 2:00 a.m., crews received a call of a semi off the road.

Doherty said when they arrived on scene firefighters encountered “a fair amount of fluids on the road, from oil that was leaking from the vehicle.”

“Our crews basically contained the spill and utilized some of our absorbent materials, and cleanup materials,” Doherty said.

Mainroad North Island Contracting crews also assisted with the cleanup.

The driver was out of the semi truck and appeared to be uninjured, according to Doherty.

Drive BC reports that the next update is at 11:00 a.m.
