Cona Hostel suffers major damage in morning fire

COURTENAY, B.C. – A fire at the Cona Hostel broke out this morning.

The hostel is located on Anderton and 5th Street, just below the 5th Street bridge.

Michael Bestergaard was staying at the hostel, and he said no one knows how the fire started.

“I was in the bathroom and when I came out, I just saw smoke. I couldn’t hear anything,” Bestergaard said.

“I went to the other rooms to make sure all my other friends got out safely.”

He added that he fortunately managed to take his laptop, passport and visa with him.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

We have reached out to the fire department for more details. Their comment is forthcoming.
