Future of Mack Laing Heritage Trust to be discussed

COMOX, B.C. –The Mack Laing Heritage Trust will once again be in the spotlight tomorrow.

Residents are invited to join council members, senior management, and special interest groups to take part in an active workshop, to be held during Comox’s committee of the whole meeting.

The purpose of the workshop is to consider future improvements to the Mack Laing Nature Park, including the potential use of money given in trust to the town by Mack Laing in his will.

The Mack Laing Trust has been a polarizing issue for decades.

In 1973, Laing deeded his property and home to the Town of Comox.

Since 1983, the Town of Comox has operated the nature park, adding trails and interpretive signs to foster the public’s appreciation of nature.

In 1982, Mack Laing also gave, in trust, the residual cash from his estate to the Town of Comox.

Council has recently decided to move forward the Town’s court application to modify the trust applicable to the money.

The Town’s original proposal to the court was to disassemble an existing structure (Shakesides) in Mack Laing Nature Park and use the money to construct a viewing site/platform in its place.

Before asking the court to accept this proposal, council members want to hear ideas from the public for the park, that, according to a release, “would increase public recreational enjoyment and continue to honour the conservation and education goals laid out by Mack Laing.”

This workshop will be held at the Town of Comox Community Centre, 1855 Noel Avenue on Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
