Weekend hockey preview

The end of January and start of February kicks off with a bang! There’s plenty of great hockey action for fans this weekend.

Start off with the Comox Valley Glacier Kings. They’ve been off for a week but now it’s time to get back to work. Tomorrow night (Saturday, January 31st), they face their rivals…the Campbell River Storm!

Looking at the standings, the Storm are way ahead of the Yetis in the VIJHL North Division. They’ve got 70 points on the season to put them in first place. The Glacier Kings are in 2nd place in the division with 48 points. The last time these two teams met, Campbell River defeated the Glacier Kings 9-1. Puck drops tomorrow at 7:30 at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.

But Campbell River fans don’t have to wait until tomorrow. The Storm face the Nanaimo Buccaneers tonight (Friday, January 30th)! The Bucs are in 3rd place in the North Division. Campbell River beat Nanaimo 9-3 the last time they faced off against each other.

Shifting gears to the BCHL now.

The Powell River Kings have a 2-night home stand to look forward to. Coming off Wednesday’s 3-2 overtime win, they’re up against the Cowichan Valley Capitals, who beat them 4-3 in overtime this past Tuesday. Puck drops in Powell River at 7:15 tonight (Friday, January 30th)! Then tomorrow (Saturday, January 31st), the Kings go face-to-face with none other than who? The Cowichan Valley Capitals! Puck drops in game 2 of this back-to-back at 5 o’clock.

Now in the NHL, the Canucks face the Buffalo Sabres tonight (Friday, January 30th). Vancouver’s had a rough start to the second half of the season. They lost 4-0 to the Ducks on Tuesday. The Canucks then start the month off against Minnesota on Sunday, February 1st.

In other Canucks news, the team’s acquired defenceman Adam Clendening from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Gustav Forsling. So far this season, Clendening’s split his time with the Blackhawks and Rockford IceHogs. He collected two points (1-1-2) in four games with Chicago and 13 points (1-12-13) in 38 games with Rockford.
