Cumberland hoping to add vehicle charging stations

CUMBERLAND B.C – Cumberland council voted in favour of pursuing a grant application for two electric charging stations.

The grant would come from Clean BC, and if approved, would cover 73 percent of the installation costs.

The village hopes to add two level two stations, which are much quicker than the level one station currently located at the Comox Valley Visitors Centre, as they use a higher output and can provide a stop and shop charging experience.

Michelle Mason, the financial officer for the village said they will have to wait until late 2019 to find out if they can move forward with the project.

“We will not find out until fall of 2019 if the grant is approved, at that point we will include it in our 2020 financial budget.”

She added if Clean BC approves the application, Cumberland would join a large network of communities who want level two charging stations.

“It’s a grant application that the Regional District of Naniamo is going to be putting in, they are going to be the lead applicant and they’re putting the grant application in for a number of different municipalities that want to join in,” said Mason.

“If we get the grant approved and the project goes forward, it’s actually kind of a network of electric vehicle charging stations all over the mid island, and there will be public outreach for this program.”

Council will now have to wait until late 2019 to see if the grant application is approved by Clean BC, and will discuss how to move forward at that time.
